That is pure BS.  I had a double boxed package crushed by UPS with damage to the 
contents.  The driver even apologized and the damage was noted.

Or perhaps the DHL plane that flipped and burned at EWR, destroying all the 
contents, was the fault of the shippers?

Accidents happen.  If something is obviously improperly packed it can be damaged 
in normal handling but for those reasonably packed and insured I expect 
compensation when an accident occurs.
