AN/TRC sets are usually (historically) contrained to being hauled somewhere, 
set up and operated.  Constraint may be antenna(s), telephone/telegraph lines, 
etc.  AN/PRC-47 should have been either AN/TRC-xx (you can't practically 
speaking walk around with it while operating, regardless of which antenna you are 
using) or AN/GRC-xx or AN/URC-xx (there's also a vehicular and a fixed 
variant).  AN/PRC-47 directly replaced AN/GRC-9 (or its AN/GRC-87 and AN/VRC-34 
variants).
