I no longer recall the exact wording or timing, but most domestic
commercial operations have already converted to non-lead bearing solder.
Poor eutectic properties, but what the heck? Most electronic stuff is
manufactured in China anyway.
I'm glad you mentioned Freon®. After being previously burned on other
banned items, I laid in a stock of R-12. Now here is my dilemma: R-12
is selling on e-pay for about $18 - $20 a pound in 14 or 12 oz
containers, but only about $12 - $14 a pound in the 30 pound bottles. So
should I quit using my small cans and tap the big bottle, or sell the
bottle and keep using the cans? Always the possibility the bottle will
go flat after it is opened. So will some cans, I discovered recently, to
my dismay.
BTW, solder has a half-life also. If you plan to stockpile it, provide
for a moisture - free, oxygen - free storage environment like dry
nitrogen. Seems everything is complicated.
