What type of radio would be used for
coordination of fire control with the navy ? not like they used the
tactical FM band, although the old TBS radios of the period may have
produced as much FM as AM. Maybe their was another intermediate radio
for use for that traffic? like a TCS on a jeep?

Not really pertinent to D Day, Ray, as few Marines were there, however the
Navy/Usmc used three jeep mounted radios in the PTO. The TCS, SCR-608 and MAH
(RT-19/ARC-4).
In addition to these factory or depot fitted radios there is photographic
evidence of the use of the SCR-510/SCR-610 installed on the top of the TCS radio
cabinets on some jeeps. I also have a photo of a SCR-1000 operating on the
hood of a USMC radio jeep on Guam in 1944. Air, land, sea ... the mix of radios
used and what for is complicated.
I do know from interviewing a former USMC radio jeep operator the TCS was
used to communicate with command ships and to direct Naval gunfire. 15 men were
used to perform this task, driver, radio operator, USMC lieutenant, Navy
Lieutenant, USMC sergeant and 10 Marines to guard them.
