That's no surprise, as what you're describing sounds like a standard dual-sided telephone operator's headset or handset plug. These were widely used on switchboards and PBX consoles, and in fact still find use in radio dispatch centers and air traffic control applications. Heck, I'm using one in my van for the comm headset.
They're still supported, and still available new. Hope that helps.
