I'd concur with Bruce's answer. With a similar connector at both ends, these
were heavily used in telephony and teletype, to connect circuits from TTY,
and voice up to T1 digital. They are still used for that but have mostly been
replaced by bantam, smaller plugs, which are molded and non-dismantleable.
The reason for 2 connectors is you usually have a send + ground and a
receive+ground sides to the circuit.
I've taken these apart also, just as you have, removing one plug, especially
if the cord is cloth and nice and clean, red or green; they make a nice cw key
cord+plug. Or, you can use the small screws and such to repair other phone
jacks.
