As an RS-6 owner I've been following these discussions for a
number of years. I shared the skepticism about the B-47's:
We fly to Moscow and nuke the place. Then in the aftermath
of a full-scale nuclear war, somebody's going to come and
pick us up!
However, in recent years I've been hearing more about the
RB-47's. Apparently, intrusion missions into the Soviet
Union were not uncommon in the pre-satellite era. One can
imagine find oneself on the ground in Bumfukistan without
the balloon having gone up, perhaps with the Russkys having
only a vague idea that you were there. It might even make
sense to leave the diplomats know where you were.
The possible exisistance of a hand-crank generator setup
does make me feel better about the whole thing.
Perhaps time will loosen the tongues of the folk who know.
