Used during WW2 and probably into the 50s. Descended from the BC-441 which,
in turn, was a late 30s Hallicrafters marine radiotelephone set. The
SCR-543 extended the frequency range, added several channels, increased the power a
bit and included a gasoline MG set to provide primary power. Originally
intended as a transportable field set carried in a small truck and unpacked and
set up as needed. Probably used very little in this role, however, because of
it's low power and somewhat cumbersome configuration, and most sets likely
ended up in fixed installations. Records show, for example, that the BC-669
(radio part of the system) was used by coast artillery units at Ft. MacArthur in
San Pedro, CA, during the War to communicate with vessels operating in
adjacent waters and with other fixed stations up and down the coast.
