IIRC, it was quite effective. I can't remember when it DIDN'T work,  
and although I never, ever, had a battery explode, I DID have 
some hydrogen explode, one time only (I'm a fast learner!!!)  when 
I had a spark when disconnecting the cables. The battery wasn't 
damaged, and the only damage to myself was ringing ears for a 
few minutes.

I probably have an over-worked Guardian Angel...
