Many years ago, my father knew someone that remanufactored lead-acid car
batteries. I bought one for my 1972 350 Buick Skylark. My father was asking
what was done to remanufactor the batteries. What he told me was the
battery was drained of the acid and filled with distilled water. The
battery was charged and redrained. The battery was again refilled with
distilled water and recharged. This process was repeated until the battery
would no longer draw current while charging. The battery was then refilled
with acid and considered remanufactored. This process was to remove the
sluge below the plates in the battery and remove the sulfation from the plates.

It seemed to work. Another interesting opoint was the difference in a 12
month battery and a 60 month battery was only the distance from the bottom
of the plates and the bottom of the battery. The longer the battery was
warrantied for, the more catchment area for sludge. This prolonged the
shorting of the plates internally due to the sludge.

YMMV
