I would strongly suggest that if you want maximum efficiency for the ole TCS and
similar equipment is
that you construct
a " well built", Hi Q, large inductor antenna tuner using any of the common
circuits that have been published for years. A "1:4 step-up broadband
(toroidal) xfmr" . . . will certainly assist in transferring some of the power
and is often used as an easy fix and is small in size, however the transformer
can present another loss in what is all ready a somewhat marginal situation.
The toroidal transformer can be very efficient but the device
must be designed for the specific frequency that it will be used for otherwise
you can experience considerable loses. Any "transformer" no matter what the
frequency of use will experience some loses as there is no free lunch.
Suggested reading on this subject is W2DU's book "Reflections" published by the
ARRL, chapters 13, 14, 17, and 21.
You can perform an easy efficiency test on your home brew antenna transformer or
an antenna tuner by
checking to see if it is warm after a extended transmission.
