My father, who fought in the ETO from D-Day to the Occupation-
said that at the start of the war, they were training (stateside)
with old 1920s era radios; there weren't enough of the newer
radios to go around. The radios didn't work, obviously.
They just packed them in and set them up as part of the
exercises.
