Last Saturday, I got a second R-48/TRC-8, which appears
un-molested, unlike my first copy. I also got the companion T-30, to which
the TM 11-618A illustrations do not do justice. Neither of these are
mentioned in any of the five "surplus perversion" manuals I have (nor
SIG-3, TM 11-310, or the 11-487 I have). Can they can be slid down to the
1.25cm (220 mc) Ham band without butchery? The first one I got had the
appropriate markings white-outed on the dial; is it that easy? What, if
anything, needs to be tweaked? Is the extreme broad-bandedness of these
sets an issue?
I also got a BC-639, which I'm told is the ground-based receiver
part of the late-war 100-156mc AM (SCR-522) setup. It's also not mentioned
in any manual I have. Since it's rack mount, I'd suppose there's a lot
more to the set ... at least it's also un-molested, tho the front lettering
is faded from long solar exposure. Is it worth "fooling" with, good for
trade, or just a "looky what I got?"
Locally, I was given eight wheels off a Chrysler-built? FMC motor
coach. They're 7.5x17 deep-dish split-rim with 6" center hole and 4-3/4"
on-center spacing between any two bolt holes, with some good medium-duty
Michelin tires. Was this size ever used on military vehicles? Will sell
to good home or scrap yard ... I can ship them truck freight: they're so
heavy, just picking one up is life-threatening!
The discussion of the F-10 filter reminds me I have a nice-looking
F-15 here. I seem to recall there's some minor internal mods, tho. I can
dig it out and look, if anyone's interested. I've been told what this went
with, but I neglected to write it down and put it with it ... e
