The #6-32 holes are to mount a dust seal, Todd.  It's a rectangular box
with a hole in the front and a felt seal to keep gremlins and dirt out
when the receiver is mounted on the shock mount.  Often discarded, it's
an important part of the receiver case.  Sounds like yours went the way
of the dustbin...
