"Popular Communications" magazine October 2006 edition, 'Military Radio
Monitoring On VHF, UHF< HF< & Satellites" column (3 pages) by Tom Swisher
covers the following:
The Warthogs Of Idaho (A10's at Gowen Field)
Propagation Challenges (VHF low band FM)
Callsign Tips
Tom Swisher answers a reader from Boise Idaho, who can't seem to find other
than the tower frequency active with a table of frequencies (17 total)
primarily air traffic control related derived from internet sources.
Unfortunately no base support LMR net frequencies were provided BUT he
provides an idea for which bands to search. Interestingly "Grove's Military
Frequency" 2nd (now bundled as "Grove's Frequency Master File" edition lists
24 base support LMR nets & 7 additional tactical military air related
frequencies. Another table lists units US wide flying A10 aircraft.
Low band skip suggestions include what freqs ranges are affected & what/when
to expect it. One frequency is given as an example. Actually Tom brings up
an interesting aspect, overall we do see VERY little reporting of skip on
the various lists. My guess is not that many hobbyists monitor or search
VHF low band, unless there's a unit(s) in their areas that utilize that
frequency band.
Callsigns, some ideas (web resources) on how to find out who callsigns
belong to, as well as the typical GHFS general calls with another table of
HF Global Communications System Frequencies (voice & ALE) (17 freqs).
