Hello John…..thank you for the announcement message I sent all those
years ago about putting EAR on the air! It’s hard to believe that it was
on the air pretty much continuously since that date. One outage was
caused by rodents chewing on the RG-6 that fed power and drive to
the finals at the antenna base.
More recently the vertical portion of the antenna broke just above the
insulator on top of the helix house from fatigue of flexing in the high
winds we get here on the east shore of Lake Huron. The transmitter
only required repair once, and that was in the early days, and it just
kept on sending otherwise.
I’m not on the air much, aside from 160, 80, and 40 metres, but I do a
lot of “listening” to the various digital modes on 2200 and 630 metres.
I also have a SID detector using a pair of loop antennas, one vertical
and one horizontal. They feed a Behringer UMC202HD USB audio
interface connected to a Win10 PC running Spectrum Lab as a VLF
receiver with the plotter screen activated.
