Mike, a location 5 miles away would definitely be in the far field, which is 
ideal for being sure variations you're seeing are really radiated signal and 
not misleading changes due to stray local coupling in the vicinity of the 
transmit antenna.  Propagation influences should be quite negligible.

The only thing would be, can you disable AGC on the receiver and does the 
sound card not employ AGC either, so Argo would be seeing the full change in 
field strength accurately during adjustments?  If not, you might actually be 
better off pointing a webcam at the S-meter and using it for an indicator.
