Just occurred to me that if the background executable you're trying to 
turn off is a component of a legitimate program, the next time you use 
that program itself, it may restart the service on its own and return 
it to the registry, etc.  If so, the only permanent cure is to 
uninstall the program or get a fix from its maker.  Or, live with the 
startup error messages you'll get by deleting or renaming.
