One 555 generating a slow sine wave, another, slower, with a diode,
transistor, even a mechanical relay or what have you, to clip the output of
the first timer at the tight time.  All you'd have to do is adjust the
timing of the first 555 for the QRSS speed, and the other 555 for blanking
interval.  Didn't he mention using a 556 at one time???

I haven't worked with 555s in years, but I think it could be duplicated in
an afternoon, the most difficult part would be the blanking timing, which he
DID mention!

I have a couple of the old Radio Shack 555 timer books, I see a couple of 
circuits that could probably be put together for his keyer.
