Mitch I built the loop frame out of 1 inch pcv pipe, to stiffen it I
injected foam insulation from an aerosol can into the 4 ft sections
before assemby. ON the bottom section I slipped a length of steel
closet rod tubing inside and a section of 1 1/4 inch pvc over that. An
"X" fitting is at the bottom , up 4ft to another "x" fitting at 90
degrees then up 4ft to a "Tee" fitting on top. 4 ft cross arms have
"TEE " fittings at the ends. Into the TEE fittings and the X fitting
at the bottom I have 6 inch lengths of pvc with slots cut to separate
the wire.
I wound 14 turns of 22 ga wire( all I had)and hot metl glued it in
place. It measured about 850 uh, this will resonate with about 900pf. I
coupled the loop to the coax with a ft118-43 transformer, 10t primary
and one turn sec(the loop wire passing through). While this worked
well, it tunes very sharp , and would have to be retuned to go from 185
to 137. The active amp works just as well and doesnt require tuning. At
LF it didnt work well with one turn.
Last night switching from loop to the 75m dipole I used in the past and
my PA0rdt mini whip , your and Warrens signals were not visible on the
random wire and mini whip. Problem is not so much the antennas as the
noise I have picked up in the last few months. The dipole and mini whip
are on my hf tower just outside the shack, just a few feet away is the
remote reading power meter. I had to position the loop 100ft away at
the other end of the house. I found a quiet spot with my Grundig
portable.
I complained to the power co-op about the noise, yesterday a service
man came by and did some trouble shooting, today another is supposed to
come by with df and ultrasonic equipment. I have broadband noise from
lf to 5mhz.
I am really impressed with the loop. Next project is to replace the
small wire with some 16 ga stranded.
