Thanks for the ideas Stan. I tried an isolation transformer on the UPS
input but it still switches. Keep in mind that the signal the meter
transmits has to pass through the power company transformer to be
received at a distance. I learned that the meters in my area report to
a sub-station about 3 miles away. The power to my house comes about 600
feet underground at 14.4 KV to a pad mount transformer. So the meter
signal has to travel about 50 feet underground to the transformer, then
underground through buried coaxial cable to the main distribution line
and on to the sub-station several miles away. From the sub-station I
assume there is a dedicated data circuit back to the main office about
25 miles away.
I once had a nice ferro resonant isolation transformer but after not
needing it for many years I sold it at a hamfest :(

That may work for the UPS units but if the X-10 control signal is
filtered the units won't work.
