Wow, think I found it. Thanks DaveB, Warren and Bill.
I checked the BNC cord and found it OK w/ ohm meter, as it did before, but I also suspected it, as the counter
would spin off when turned on and that cord (new, JAMECO, with mini clips) was inserted. So I tried one from
a scope, Mr. Fluke stayed calm, near zero. Next tried plain BNC extension cable, same calm. Think I'll rig temp clips
to a F BNC for now.
Looks like a bad test cable. Would happed to me...now...when first trying new meter...when on tight time line. &%$@!

Check the connection between the BNC connector and the cable shield.
If its open you're effectively plugging a 'bit of wire' into the
counter input.
