When I added the chips to my 440 to make it capable of computer control, I
also bypassed that attenuator according to several well-publicized
instructions, as well as opened up the transmit to the full SW spectrum
(mainly because I had a weird VHF transverter that used a 22 MHz IF). But
removing that attenuator made a world of difference.
I did the same with my 850. It's much easier to do on the 850. Same big
difference in AM BCB reception.
