I have a TS-440 and I recall that the manual specifies that a 20dB attenuator is put in line on the AM BC band. Out of curiosity, I measured the ACTUAL attenuation - it turned out to be something like 45-50 dB !!! I did the bypass mod and of course it is much much better now! My guess is that your attenuator is in fact many dB greater than the 20dB specified in the manual.
Delta loop 111' on a side should rock, especially since you tune it!
