Thanks for the info. Static and LF sure go together.

I've been trying to come up with a simple system to rate what one has =
for static at his receiving location other than the nebulous bad, not =
too bad, fairly quiet, etc. As you point out, that's difficult due to =
the varying intensity and length of the bursts. One idea would be to =
express it as the amount of "cover-up" over an otherwise static free =
background - sort of like cloud cover percentages under a clear sky in =
aviation. 2/10 would be 20% or 2 out of every 10 seconds of listening =
pleasure covered by static. I think most listeners could fairly =
accurately estimate this with little effort.

Other ideas? If I've gone completely over the edge feel free to reign me =
back in!

  Jay,

It's hard to put a 1 to 10 rating on the static I had last night as =
compared to summer. The lightning last night at midnight was between 50 =
and 100 miles to my south. The strikes produced strong static but were =
spaced
maybe 5 to 10 seconds apart. At 8 a.m. this morning the lightning was =
less frequent and weaker since the strikes were coming from off the =
coast, maybe 200 miles ESE of my location. During summer the static is =
almost
continuously present at low levels. So on a 1 to 10 average I would =
put last night's noise between 1 and 2.

to see the results. What would you estimate your static to have been =
last night on a 10 scale - 0 being quiet and 10 being full on summer =
conditions?
