Kurt,
I can't explain the exploding appliances, but we are in the midst of the
fall "sun outage" period for geosynchronous satellites. For about a week in
March and another in October, there are short periods each day where the Sun
is behind satellites in the geosynchronous belt. The radio noise from the
Sun is greater than the signal from the satellite, and you lose TV (or
whatever) reception. The duration is perhaps 5-10 minutes, depending on the
beamwidth of your antenna.
This has nothing to do with solar spots, storms or anything else. It's just
the geometry of the Earth's orbit around the Sun.
Again, I have no explanation for the sounds from around your house. Perhaps
the events are not connected.
