Hi,
This is going to draw all kinds of flames, but you asked:
The *simplest* antenna to get up (here come the flames) for me was a
longwire. Mine was only 8' off the ground. The flames are coming to
explain why this is no good, but your question was based on just trying
the converter out. I did this very thing with Lyle's converter design and
was able to copy many NDBs and WWVB from NE OK with that 75' longwire and
the converter. At the time I was using a sixties model hollow-state HF
rig.
Flame suppression: that wire is long gone. Now I use the active whip or
my LowFER vertical and have tried a loop or two.
But if you just want to see if the converter works or not you can have
that antenna up in 5 minutes.
