I had a similar experience with a neighbor ham back in Missouri (before
WW2). I visited him several times when he'd chat away with me while his
receiver, turned down low, was obviously receiving CW. Once in a while
he'd turn around and work his bug for a few moments, but it took me
quite a while to realize he was carrying on a QSO in CW while talking to
me. I've never quite gotten there and when my wife comes in to talk to
me while I'm copying something I have a hard time catching up with what
is coming in.
