Peter:

	No, the dad isn't a bit stupid or a bad teacher, but he had learned the
code in the Navy and was trying to teach his son the same.  Jim had gone
to several conventional code classes including ones in the same radio
club, but for some reason had a mental block.  As for sending, that was
with an "Accu Keyer", circa 1975.
