[Lowfer] Experimental antenna?

Is it possible the AMRAD antenna was directional.  I spent many hours
looking for the signal, especially after Mitch reported seeing it well. 
I am just a few hundred miles from where this beacon was located. 
Perhaps Mitch's reception was sky wave.  Am I to close for sky wave and
to far for ground wave for this path?
