Agree. Surprising how much support is available from
parents/teachers/principals for adults wanting to volunteer time to import
some of their expertise into the system. It's about as rewarding as anything
I've ever done. This team competition thing probably evolved from lack of
imagination from the school system. Not too much heavy thinking goes into
making up a set of tough questions.
One exception to the norm was the rocket plane building project that the
Middle School science teacher offered as part of his regular class work. I
got to see the launching event that culminated about 4 weeks of student
effort and was impressed with the different designs and the knowledge the
students had learned about the science involved. Unfortunately this teacher
has retired and nothing similar is offered at this time. Even the school
woodworking shop has been taken out since then.
