That's a powdered iron core and will not offer anywhere near enough 
inductance for that application. Look for ferrite cores having a dull black 
color (not shinny black). The large beads on power cords and monitor video 
cables, typically #43, should work OK. Another good source of cores is 
inside AC line filters. The core used as the common mode coke is usually a 
#77 core - even better than the #43 in terms of inductance Vs turns on the 
core.
