OK Troops - here's an OT (licensed in '54) thinking about going down instead
of up into the
freqs that give me a headache just thinking about them. Just retired as R/O
from merchant
marine and thinking about VLF. At the moment, interested mostly in SWL (or
should I say
LWL?) as opposed to running TX/RX on VLF. If things prove interesting, will
upgrade
later. Would also like to look into the "whistlers" and such. Now living on
a large
lake so a good ground is pretty much assumed. Can put up up to 500 ft of
wire for
antennas.
Anyway, in regards to the Palomar VLF converter, anyone have
praises/damnations?
What, if any, advantage of converting to 3.5-4.0 mhz as opposed to 4.0 -4.5
mhz? I am of the
opinion that the 4.0-4.5 mhz readout on a receiver would make the mental
arithmetic easier.
Any other suggestions as to gear? Years ago, had a Collins R-389 when I
was in Navy
(retired as RMC) and now regret getting rid of it.
Here I would be feeding the Palomar (or any other gear) into any of the
following gear:
1) Kenwood TS-830S
2) JRC NRD-525
3) R-390
4) R-388/51J3 (with a military panadaptor)
Would appreciate any suggestions/hints/etc. on the Palomar or any other
gear. At this
point, am just in the shopping around stage.
