It's been a while since I have looked at the Palomar schematic (it's
buried around here somewhere) but doesn't it use the 1496 balanced mixer
chip?
One thing comes to mind from memory: There is a way to install a pot to
null out the osc from the output (carrier null if it were used in a SSB
rig). I recommend doing this to reduce the xtal osc level in the output. I
don't recall that Palomar did this.
I would use an IF of 2 to 3 MHz as there is little activity there and less
likelyhood of unwanted signals leaking thru.
