Mark,

The antenna is a remote tuned active whip designed and constructed by Bill
Bowers.
It features a litz wire coil and an FET pre-amp. After a recent electrical
storm
that fried nearly every antenna pre-amp in the yard, I was unable to
effect repairs and Lyle agreed to help out.

In addition to the repairs, he made some modifications and the result is
great! The
antenna now "hears" better than it ever did before. Last night allowing me
to log
LEK for the first time ever in QRSS.

Hope to put more folks in the logbook tonight. Saw traces of BRO but
nothing I could ID.

In addition to the active whip, I was also given Bill Bowers old 10 foot
air loop
antenna (it's huge!). In it's original configuration, it was wound with
litz wire too.
Amazing "Q" on that antenna, but it would not function at all when wet.

In Alabama we get a lot of wet weather, so that was impractical. I re-wound
the loop with #14 stranded copper wire with the PVC insulation. Lower "Q"
but now it's all weather. It's tuned pre-amp was also damaged in the storm
and repaired yesterday. It tested out great again too.
