Hi Bill:
I sort of got the answer for myself when I was describing things to a couple
of Idaho Hams at coffee. I speculated that the 50'x 50 loop dimension was
actually a horizontal loop and not a vertical loop as I originally
envisioned. That would make the loop a top hat on a vertical (feed line) and
the vertical run would be limited to 15 meters. Your message confirms my
guess.
Here in eastern Idaho I am trying to set up an antenna raising crew drawn
from a few local hams so I can make a second attempt at raising a 45' long
piece of 6 inch diameter irrigation tubing for a vertical antenna for the ID
beacon that Lyle provided my a couple of years ago. The last time we tried
this I got 'clunked' by the tubing and had to go off to urgent care to get
the bleeding stopped. Needless to say it ended to effort for the day (it was
Halloween day appropriately) and before the next attempt could be put in
place the snow arrived.
This time (some time in late September at the earliest) I will be using a
power winch, about three times as many people (6) and set things up so that
the top hat is pulled into place after the tube is erected. The beacon
transmitter and the solar power supply are the same units as had been
planned before. The location is out in the field about 3 miles from my home
where there is no power or even power lines and except for portable
generators, brought in on a case by case basis, the site power is solar from
only two panels. I still need to fabricate the battery/charger container so
it will survive high winds and low temperatures out on the Snake River Plain
during the winter.
If we ever get it all together I will let you know.
