Hello Gary,

I have a suggestion that will help keep "field day blues" at bay. One
suggestion is setting up a special event station several times a year. A
special event station operated from Shaker Town or High Bridge would be
something that comes to mind. Special Event Stations are heralded in QST
each month and allow one to have as many field days as you want. I try
to work as many of these stations as I can each weekend and about this
time of year there are several. There are about fifteen on the air this
very weekend. You can follow these all year long at the following web
address QST link <http://www.arrl.org/contests/spev.html> (
http://www.arrl.org/contests/spev.html ) if you don't get QST. Special
event stations typically offer QSL cards and/or Certificates that are
collected by many hams.

This past weekend Scott County ARES set up a HF and VHF station at the
fifth annual Safety Day. Radios, tuner, push poles, antenna, shelter,
and sun screen and it was field day again in Georgetown. In addition to
providing more public exposure for amateur radio we had a good time. We
made slightly less than 100 contacts but we were allowed the opportunity
to brag on our county with hams in three countries. The nice thing about
being a ham is that we can have as many field days as we want. Hmm,
maybe a special event near Natural Bridge or the Red River Gorge might
be fun.........

After sitting here for awhile tonight with the headphones on listening to code tapes, my mind started to wonder off thinking about field day. (Likely excuse for cutting the code practice huh?) I wondered why since field day was so enjoyable, why not have it more than once a year? I know it would not be very likely to convince hams worldwide to add an event, but why not at the state level? For example, a statewide field day in the fall. Using approx. the same layout. Is this something that has been discussed in the past? Surely it is not an original idea. I know I can't be the only ham in the state that sit and counted the days til field day. If anyone else agrees that this may be a good idea, voice your opinion and lets see what happens.
