[Kenwood] TS-50 problems

In the past I also had difficulty getting the 3V lithium cells with the spotwelded-on tabs for various handis. I ended up just using regular button cells. The trick to soldering leads onto them is to sand or grind off the plating (a dremel is useful with this), use an agressive acid-based flux (which you have to clean up afterwards) and pre-tin your leads and the prepared area on the button cell with the MINIMUM heat necessary. Wear safety glasses. YMMV.

Hi all,

      I have a TS-50 that has been sitting unused for a few years. I 
expect the 3 Volt lithium cell needs to be replaced. I'm having some 
difficulty getting one ordered and shipped to Hawaii. I am checking out 
the radio to see what still works and what doesn't. Seems like it is 
mostly working but I am having trouble with the MHz and DOWN buttons. It 
seems like the buttons respond to being pushed most of the time, but the 
functions that occur when pushing them are not right. Sort of random 
things happen, but not the right things. I'd like to know if anyone else 
has experience similar problems on a TS-50? What can I do to fix it? 
Should the radio work properly, aside from memories not being saved 
through a power cycle, when the 3 Volt cell is dead?
