Thanks for the clue, Curt. That would explain why I hear a sidetone for a few 
seconds when I first turn the rig on: as soon as a resistor heats up, it opens 
up.

I'll be doing some more digging today.

One thing I don't yet know is exactly how this rig DOES CW: does the key 
operate the sidetone, which keys the rig on through the VOX, which sends 
the sidetone through the normal audio channel, or does the key do 
something else?

I have more reading to do...

The rig is much more stable and reliable now, BTW. It sounds very good on 
SSB, and works properly it seems.
