I sent an email earlier today about an offset problem I was having on SSB with a used Kenwood TS950. Good news-I fixed the problem without taking off the covers. While looking in the manual for something else, I stumbled across the power on functions on p. 24 of the manual. It says that if you hold down the USB button while turning on the radio, it "enables the FSK and SSB signal pitch to be changed by the CW pitch control. This will make the receive frequency differ from the transmit frequency, so correction using RIT is required."
Well that sounded exactly like my problem. So I turned off the rig, held down the USB button while turning on the rig, and give it a try. I turned off the RIT and answered a XE2 station calling CQ. A nice 15 minute ragchew followed, and the 950 works fine on SSB now.
Not sure why anyone would want a function like that, but guess it is a case of reading the manual before operating
