[Kenwood] TS820 Frequency Display Problem

It is common for this rig to have a problem with bad contact of the bearing surfaces of the variable cap in the VFO if the unit has been sitting idle for a long period of time. Usually this can be resolved by running the VFO from stop to stop several hundred times or least through range where the display misbehaves.  What is happening is that actual VFO frequency is way off and the microcontroller is merely showing the frequency it calculates.  You will usually see the frequency jump a large amount when you hit the bad spot on the bearing. If lots of exercise of the dial does not cure it then you may have to remove the side cover of the VFO box and lube the cap with some silver bearing grease which is available from Mouser.

Sometimes they do, other times they do not.
Looks like the number 8 does not display.
One can hear hams on the set.  I have not tried to transmit.

Anyone remember a simple cause for this kind of behavior?
