Mike,
I been using the 480HX in my pickup for a couple of years now with no
problems to report. It has been as reliable as a radio can be. I replaced
an Icom IC-706MKIIG with this rig. Before I removed the 706 I installed
the 480 and hooked them both to my screwdriver antenna through a 2
position coax switch. For a few days I compared the two radios simply by
tuning them both to the same frequency and flipping the switch between the
2 radios. I was surprised to hear very little difference. The sensitivity
was about the same on both but the 706 seemed to handle close in station
interference slightly better. The noise blanker was better on the 480 most
likely attributable to the fact that it is adjustable on the 480 and fixed
on the 706. Neither radio's DSP noise reduction worked very well though
the 480's was a little more adjustable. The 706 had VHF and UHF capability
but I have a dual band mobile for that so I went with the 480 for the
extra 100 watts out. The 706 can't touch that! 73
