I would say that you will benefit from the additional height, if you can
raise the whole antenna, of course that will be best. With regard to
your other questions, remember that even a bedspring can be an antenna;
you are simply talking about degrees of compromise. The idea of an
inverted "v" is that you will raise the "best" part of the antenna. An
inverted "v" dipole works, but not as well as a flat top one. Of course
this depends on the propagation and areas of interest. This is a hobby
and I encourage you to experiment! Assuming that you are interested in
the best DX performance, higher is better (well to a point).
I have included a link to the EZNEC software site. You can use this to
model the antenna and decide for yourself. Caution, antenna modeling

Question 1: Would raising it even 5' or so off the roof make a

performance difference? 10'?
Question 2: If I make an inverted V out of it, how critical is it that

V remains a straight line? Could both halves of the dipole be less than
a
180=B0 straight line. maybe 90=B0 degrees or so? (Think of the swept =
back
wings
of a jet plane) I'm not talking about the angle formed by the height of
the pole, but the outer ends of each wire being closer to each other, if
that makes sense?
This is mostly for 40 meter SWL for now.
