[Kenwood] Problem that may not be a problem??? Help!

I was inside my Kenwood TS180 yesterday because the receive audio sounded 
funny.
It sounded tinny.
I also noticed that when on the DFC VFO on transmit I would for just an 
instant see dots like a PLL unlock.
This took place when I would key the mike on and off and only on the DFC VFO.
Now, here is my question.
The shielded mini cable that goes from the Main VFO and the DFC VFO show no 
continuity between the the shield and the center conductor when the connector 
is removed from the Premix Board. However if I connect the connectors to the 
boards there is continuety between the center conductor and the shield.
In fact there is continuity to all the other boards I check with my meter 
that this coax goes to.
Again, if I disconnect the connectors from the source board and from the 
destination board the shield and center conductors show no continuity.
Seems to me that ground and shield should be isolated from each other.
Why separate them if they are going at the connectors if they are going to 
have continuity when connected to the boards?
Do I have a short to ground or is this normal?
By the way I measured with no power to the radio.
Also noticed that if I press the rit on button to the DFC VFO slowly I get a 
frequency on the display that is about 12 Khz lower halfway down the switch 
before full depression.
This does not happen when I press the main VFO rit button.
I think this problem is related.
Please let me know what you guys think about this problem.
