I have a MFJ 1026 - Noise Canceller and it is very
effective, most times.  I use it with an external vertical
antenna and what happens is that it is an electrical
phasing circuit which phases the canceller antenna
with the station antenna, and effectively nulls the 
noise so that the radio can be used.  This is especially
so with the TS570 with its NB button, but no blanker
action at all.  Actually, the blanker drops the noise here
about 5 db above 50 Mhz but that is all.  If it were not
for the MFJ unit, I would not be able to use the TS570s.
My noise problem is power lines, electric company is
looking (so they say) but to date the noise is still upwards
of 25db over S9.  The only radio I have that will reduce
the noise (from 25 over S9 on 40 and 20, 35 over 9 on 80m)
is the 25+ year old Tempo 2020.  I now have two of them
since they are so effective.  But as effective as those
radios are, sometimes the MFJ canceller is required to assist.
