Lowered RF gain is always good when there's lots of noise present.

The MFJ noise canceler doesn't use a separate receiver. It uses a
separate antenna, hopefully that hears the noise well, but not signals
as well and hopes with phase and amplitude balances to cancel out some
of the noise. I know there have been circuits published in RSGB, might
have one scanned that I could send those interested in how it works.
