[Kenwood] Buying a used kenwood

Hello Hart,
  Have you tried one of those MFJ noise cancelers?  I have no experience
with them and maybe someone can dispute their claims, but I believe it is a
receiver that is tuned slightly away from your radio's frequency and cancels
out anything it picks up that is common to both receivers so:
radio(signal+noise) - MFJ(noise) = mostly just signal

The other thing to do is to lower the RF gain (since you won't be able to
hear signals under the noise anyway), and use a low pass filter on the sound
coming out of the rig.  The sound may be muddy, but you will be less subject
to fatigue.
