To all who replied, thank you.  Several people suggested the problem may be
linked to the microphone and its associated circuitry.  I have had the 850
on the bench running for many hours using an ASTRON power supply at 13.8
volts and the unit has not gone into scan.  Since I am unable to duplicate
the problem I had originally on Field Day, I am leaning towards low battery
voltage as the cause of the scanning.  I was given some ideas on what to
check if/when the unit goes into "automatic" scanning and I have filed them
aware for future use (hopefully never.)
