I am no expert here, but some back of the envelope
battery need calculations follow.
I am assuming battery can operate until it reaches 50%
of Amp-hour capacity. It really depends on needs of
the rig - at what voltage will it be unhappy. For K2
i am told this around 11 volts.
If rig is a K2, and its operating CW, its receive
current is around 80 mA (when backlight is off and
receiver is set for optimum current biasing) and when
transmitting 5w it will consume about an amp. (Extra
margin can result if we try operating at 2 watts when
running a frequency).
If transmit duty cycle is 25%, this is 250 mA per hour
+ 80 mA from receive operation, or 330 mA per hour
total.
24 hours * 0.33 = 7.92 Amp hours. meaning at least 15
Amp hours is needed. for margin, two medium sized gel
cells should do it !
for other rigs - please note how much current is
needed to sustain receive operation and do your math.
you may need a much larger battery capacity.
73, curt
