In my humble opinion, a $200 charge for the use of any site for Field Day is
ludicrous. Of all organizations, the county's fire departments should
understand the significance of an emergency communications exercise.
Someone hit me up side the head if I have this wrong, but isn't the primary
function of CARET/ARES/RACES to provide emergency communications in the
event that the county's system or 911 goes south? In that event, would we
then charge Gamber $200/day to have one of our members sit in there
enginehouse with a two meter rig so that they can communicate? I think not
(it would be illegal anyway).
I think that this is a matter of "failure to communicate" between the club
and the Carroll County Fire Dept. Perhaps we need to send a
representative(s) to one of their Chiefs' meetings to explain
CARET/ARES/RACES/CCARC/FD. If they knew what these services are all about,
maybe they would welcome the opportunity to host FD at their locations.
Imagine being able to change to a different site every year.
